World Masters Games - 10-16 October, 2009 - Sydney Olympic Park (by Chris Lock/Greg Lewin)

Ryde Masters swimmers returned a fantastic result from the World Masters Games held recently at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. More than 30 swimmers and volunteers from the club took part.

Overall the clubs haul of medals was 34, including 14 Gold, 3 Silver and 17 Bronze. That is a fantastic result when competing against swimmers from all over the world.

We have come to expect great performances from our long time member Jenny Whiteley (50-54yrs) but her success with 5 individual gold and 2 relay gold medals is just awesome. In those swims were a number of smashed world records. In the 200m breaststroke Jenny recorded the fastest time of all the women over all age groups and that aint bad when you consider the age groups start at 25 years old!

Other fantastic medal performances came from coach extrordinaire Vicky Watson (40-45) - 3 gold, 2 bronze; triathelete Julia Hector (55-59) - 2 gold; newly returned member Robyn Stutchbury (70-75) - 2 silver, 2 bronze; irrepressible Peter Grogan (75-79) 1 silver, 1 bronze; excitable Chris Lock (65-69) 1 silver, 3 bronze; thumbs up David Hudson - 1 silver, 1 bronze; stealthy Russel Ferguson.

The gold medal relays were:

Women 4x50 Free (200-239) - Jenny Whiteley, Wendy Offord, Julia Hector, Vicky Watson

Women 4x50 Medley (200-239) - Vicky Watson, Jenny Whiteley, Julia Hector, Lois Jenkin

The bronze medal relays were:

Mixed 4x50 Medley (200-239) - Vicky Watson, Jenny Whiteley, Christopher Lock, Russel Ferguson

Mixed 4x50 Free (200-239) - Vicky Watson, Jenny Whiteley, Christopher Lock, Russel Ferguson

Men 4x50 Free (120-159) - Anthony MacFarlane, Russel Ferguson, Andre Martin, David Hudson

Of course not everyone can get amongst the medals and probably for most masters swimmers training and competing is about personal achievement and satisfaction. Carnivals like the World Masters Games give great incentive to set personal swimming goals. So it is great to see that many personal best times or goals were achieved. Well done to Yvette Cotton, Sally Brady, Jane Taylor, Peter Barfod, John Amery, Melissa Blundell, Susan Leech, Maureen Pollock, Jaime Turner, Wendy Seale, and Helen Rubin.

Ryde Masters who voluntered their time were Jamie Turner, Helen Rubin, Lorraine Lock, Diana Hill, Bruce Hartwell and Greg Lewin. Jamie's thoughts on the Games was "Better than gaining a medal I lost over a kilo!" which happened after 7x12 hour days co-ordinating the volunteers and officiating. Competition was at last a chance to relax!
